This City @ Roadhouse, Manchester

First band of the night Sons of Albion sound like the illegitimate child of Audioslave and Incubus, which could have been interesting if it wasn't for the fact they take all the worst bits of both bands and turn it into something that's just boring and passionless. Perhaps if they refined their sound and started to put a bit more energy into their live performance then maybe, just maybe, they may be able to forge a place for themselves in the local music scene.

For reasons unclear to me This City were the next band of the night, but I wasn't about to complain as they are easily one of my favourite UK bands, and have been for the last year and a half. Just back from a five week stint in the States recording their debut album the band are clearly feeling the effect of their hectic schedule, and are far from their best tonight. Even so, they still manage to put on a show that's impossible not to enjoy. This City play a brand of angular indie/pop/hardcore which just screams out to be danced to, which is partly the reason it's not one of their more memorable shows because, like all bands, This City feed off the reaction of the crowd, and tonight the atmosphere couldn't be worse, which is a massive shame. Frontman Christopher Purr has also stepped up his game since I last saw them, with his vocals having that extra bit of bite that perhaps was lacking at times before. With their debut album due out in the summer you will be hearing a lot more from this Brighton outfit, miss them at your peril.

Final band of the night are Canterbury who have been deservedly making waves in the UK music scene recently, and tonight they give an assured performance, demonstrating their ear for melody. Canterbury play the kind of infectious, sugary pop music that isn't too far removed from pre-rubbish Furthest Drive Home. To compare them to other UK bands though would be an injustice, because there's an air of originality about this band, not just in their style, but also in their live performance. The dual vocals are especially effective, leading to some devastatingly catchy moments. There were some lulls in the set where I felt myself drifting off now and again, but on the whole they managed to keep my attention, which is a fairly impressive feat in it itself!
